WhatsApp Business API price in India (2026): what you actually pay

12 October 2026 · 3 min read · BTAV Connect team

Searching for the WhatsApp Business API price in India gives confusing answers, because there are really two separate bills: the charges Meta (WhatsApp) makes for messages, and the fee of the software platform you use to send and receive them. This guide explains both, so you can estimate your monthly cost before you start.

The two parts of the cost

CostWho charges itHow you pay
WhatsApp message chargesMetaDirectly to Meta, by card on your WhatsApp Business Account
Platform subscription (inbox, chatbot, campaigns)Your provider, e.g. BTAV ConnectMonthly or yearly plan, plus 18% GST

With BTAV Connect these stay separate: your plan pays only for the panel, and Meta bills its message charges straight to the card on your WhatsApp Business Account. We never add a markup on Meta's charges.

How Meta charges for WhatsApp messages

Meta charges per template message you send, and the rate depends on the template's category and the customer's country. For Indian numbers the categories work like this:

  • Marketing: offers, announcements, festive sale messages, re-engagement. The most expensive category.
  • Utility: order confirmations, delivery updates, appointment reminders, payment receipts. Much cheaper than marketing.
  • Authentication: one-time passwords (OTPs). Priced similar to utility.
  • Service replies: when a customer messages you, you can reply freely for 24 hours. These replies are not charged.

Meta revises its rate card from time to time. Always check the current India rates on Meta's official WhatsApp Business Platform pricing page before you plan a large campaign.

What is free

  • Replying to customers who message you first, for 24 hours after their last message.
  • Utility templates sent inside that open 24-hour window.
  • Conversations that start from a Click-to-WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page call-to-action button, for a limited free window.

This means a business that mostly answers incoming enquiries, for example a clinic, coaching institute or local shop, can run on WhatsApp very cheaply. Your Meta bill grows mainly with outbound marketing campaigns.

Platform fees

The platform is the software your team actually uses: a shared inbox so several people can answer from one number, chatbots, template management, campaigns, analytics and AI replies. In India, platform plans usually range from about ₹1,000 to ₹10,000 a month depending on features and team size.

BTAV Connect plans start from ₹999 a month plus GST, with a 7-day free trial. See the full feature comparison on the pricing page.

A worked example

Imagine a coaching institute that receives 1,500 enquiries a month on WhatsApp and sends one admissions offer to 2,000 opted-in parents:

  1. Replies to the 1,500 enquiries: free, because the parents messaged first.
  2. 2,000 marketing template messages: charged by Meta at the current India marketing rate.
  3. Fee reminders sent as utility templates: charged at the lower utility rate, or free inside an open conversation.
  4. Platform plan: a fixed monthly fee plus 18% GST, with a GST tax invoice.

Five ways to keep your bill low

  1. Let a chatbot answer common questions inside the free 24-hour window instead of sending templates.
  2. Classify templates honestly. A delivery update is utility, not marketing.
  3. Send campaigns only to customers who opted in and are likely to respond. Better targeting also protects your quality rating.
  4. Use Click-to-WhatsApp ads so customers start the conversation.
  5. Pick a platform whose plan matches your team size today, and upgrade only when you need more.
